New Air Service to Link Portland with Aroostook County
(FRENCHVILLE, ME. May, 28, 2008) — New England Air Transport Inc. plans to link northern and southern Maine with service from Presque Isle and Frenchville in the St. John Valley to Portland. The new service could begin as soon as August, 2008 linking the Portland International Jetport with Presque Isle and the St John Valley in Aroostook County.
The new service, which is in the final stage of development, will offer two daily round trip flights, three days a week.
New England Air Transport Inc recently conducted a survey of 120 businesses and organizations in northern Maine. The data from the survey encouraged Jim Thibodeau and David Fernald, from Fort Kent, to conduct a similar survey in greater Portland. Fernald invites southern Maine residents to visit New England Air Transport on-line at http://www.flyneat.com and complete the survey.
Considering the high costs of driving, Thibodeau and Fernald are optimistic that people in southern Maine will respond positively, as did their counterparts in northern Maine. “It has been some years since regular service to and from Aroostook County was available,” Fernald said. “We are hopeful the venture will gain momentum, making travel between both ends of our long state more attractive.”
The undertaking is being pursued vigorously by the two entrepreneurs and member towns of the Northern Aroostook Regional Airport Authority (NARAA) which is acting as the sponsor for this initiative.
